to companion

A few days ago I received an e-mail from a person saying he was going to companion a Brazilian lady in a fair. I know that English verbs its nouns very easily and often and that you can find companion as a verb in the dictionary (at least in the most up-to-date versions, like this one), but what's wrong with good ol' accompany?

Nada de errado com o antigo, mas parece que o novo, como você mesmo disse, também está certo.
