Today I mentioned to someone the Latin expression margaritas ad porcos (pearls to the swine) and wondered if it was possible to use the word margarita as pearls in Romance languages. Even though I'd never heard margarita (Portuguese/Spanish/Italian) with that acceptation, only meaning daisy, the flower (margarida in Portuguese, margarita in Spanish and margherita in Italian), so I looked it up and learned it IS possible. I'm looking forward to using that word in casual conversation and baffling my interlocutor.
Unfortunately that word apparently doesn't have the pearl use in Romanian, French and Catalan. At least I didn't find it.
