Capital letters in weekdays, months and languages

I've seen it so many times in so many languages that I have to write about it and get it out of my system. Not all languages write weekdays, months and languages in capital letters. Actually, the only ones I'm in contact with that do so are English, German and Dutch (Dutch doesn't capitalize weekdays, though). Why is it that speakers of several languages capitalize them? English influence? But don't they read in their own language and realize that such words are not capitalized? So...

Dny týdne, měsíce a jazyky se nepíšou velkými písmeny v češtině.
