I have come across a Czech man by then name of Weisz. That is strange, because it is not written according to German (that would be Weiß or Weiss, the latter especially in Switzerland or due to technical constraints), Czech/Slovak (Vajs), Polish (Wajs), or Hungarian (Vájsz) spelling rules. I don't believe it has anything to do with the origin of the letter ß centuries ago, which is said to have arisen from joining a capital S with a capital Z as a kind of subscript.
My wife posited that the registrar was drunk when he or she recorded the name.
