Vocative and no comma

I have been observing this for a long time now. Many (most?) languages seem to be forgetting about the comma before a vocative, maybe because a lot of people equate commas with pauses and normally there is no pause before a vocative. What prompted me to write this piece was this sentence, seen on a message board on the French language, whose members are very strict with language. No one, though, seems to have noticed this error so far.

Strange coincidences in naming family members

Isn't it intriguing that French and Japanese, two totally unrelated languages, have words that can both mean father-in-law and stepfather: beau-père in French and 義父 (pronounced gifu) in Japanese? The same thing happens with belle-mère and 義母 (pronounced gibo). In those peoples' mentalities maybe the in-law or the step parent acts a substitute or additional parent and hence receives the same name. One of my Japanese dictionaries offers an interesting explanation for the meaning of 義, which reads (my translation): non-blood-related people are joined by shared children, siblings, etc.

Genitive of animate nouns in Polish and Czech

When we study Slavic languages, we learn that genitives of animate nouns end in -a, but that doesn't always seem to be the case. Polish naród (nation) , szczep (tribe) and lud (folk/people) end in -u, which is common for inanimate nouns. The funny thing is that Czech národ has a genitive in -a, unlike Polish, but lid (Polish lud) follows a similar pattern: genitive lidu. Maybe it could be argued that animate collective nouns often have a -u genitive, but this has still to be researched.

Translation of a translation

I'm reading Žert, translated as The Joke in English, in Czech and also comparing it to the Portuguese e-book version I have. Among the many incongruences between the original Czech version and the Portuguese translation, something that really caught my attention was the following passage:

"Položil jsem aktovku na stůl a otevřel okno..."
My free translation in English: I placed my briefcase on the table and opened the window.

The Portuguese version says:
Pus a toalha sobre a mesa e abri a janela. Literally: I placed the towel/tablecloth on the table and opened the table.

Where did a towel/tablecloth come from? I had no idea at first but then I was suddenly struck as if by a thunderbolt. The Portuguese version had been translated from French (a language Milan Kundera often uses to write his books) and not from Czech. Czech aktovka, briefcase, becomes French serviette, which means both a briefcase and a tablecloth. When the Portuguese translator saw that serviette, the most obvious thing to him was that the character was setting the table for a meal, most likely, and then he used the Portuguese word toalha, which means towel or tablecloth!

Escarpim

A dúvida persiste...

com sucesso

Acabo de receber uma mensagem segundo a qual a minha inscrição foi efetuada com sucesso. Até alguns anos atrás esse com sucesso não parecia existir e agora se vê em todas as partes. É certamente uma tradução literal do inglês successfully. Pergunto-me se dizer que a minha inscrição foi efetuada não bastaria.

GemCoverter converts Arabic numbers into Hebrew Numerals

So, I hope this PHP script is a great relief for all those who have difficulty switching between Arabic numbers and Hebrew Numerals.

Please add "< ? p,h,p" before the first IF clause.

Hebrew Numeral Converter

I have been having trouble converting numbers into Hebrew numerals. Finding nothing on the 'Net that does what I want to do, I created a Web application myself. The following is the PHP script. I will be using it to search Hebrew Bible by chapters and verses numbers.

$in = $_POST["in"];

elseif($in <= 299 and $in >= 200){$_900='r';}
elseif($in <= 199 and $in >= 100){$_900='q';}
else{$_900='';}

cafetinagem

Medevac

Why is it that some dictionaries record the inflected forms of the verb medevac as medevacing and medevaced instead of the more correct medevacking and medevacked? What happened to that rule that says that verbs ending in c add a k before suffixes starting with a vowel, like mimic, mimicking, mimicked, mimicker, etc.? I think Merriam Webster does a better job countenancing medevacking and medevacked, but it also lists medevacing and medevaced. Medevacing and medevacking have very similar numbers of ocurrences according to this, but medevaced (unfortunately) routs medevacked here.
